The Bilaspur High Court held state employees responsible for the death of inmate Shravan Suryavanshi in jail, ordering compensation of one lakh rupees to his family, along with a warning to pay 9% interest.
Bilaspur: The High Court has held state employees responsible for the death of an inmate and ordered the government to pay a compensation of one lakh rupees. Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice B.D. Guru's division bench stated that if the order is not complied with, 9% interest will also be payable on the compensation. This decision sends a strong message against government negligence and fulfills the demand for justice.
On January 18, the Sipat police arrested 35-year-old Shravan Suryavanshi, also known as Sarvan Tamare, for possessing illicit liquor. After a medical examination, he was sent to Bilaspur Central Jail the same day. On January 21, his health deteriorated, and he was admitted to SIMS, where he died during treatment on January 22. The post-mortem report indicated that his death was due to a head injury and shock. The deceased's wife, Lahar Bai, and minor children filed a compensation petition in the High Court. Judicial inquiry also confirmed that the head injury was the cause of death.
After hearing all parties, the court stated that the petitioners are the deceased's widow and daughters, who suffered due to the negligence of state employees. The court declared the deceased's family entitled to compensation. It condemned the recurrence of such incidents, noting that police and jail officials failed to prevent them. The state must adopt preventive measures to ensure that officials do not engage in such conduct. Ultimately, the court ordered the government to pay one lakh rupees in compensation for the untimely death of Shravan Suryavanshi.
