The Scene of Struggle: Learn About the Casualties and Destruction in Israel, Iran, and Lebanon
For about 11 months, Israel fought against Hamas, then turned its focus to Iran and Lebanon. The Houthi rebels in Yemen were also targeted. In the midst of all this, humanity has suffered greatly, and the economy has faced severe blows.
For about 11 months, Israel has been engaged in a struggle against Hamas, continuously targeting the Gaza Strip. This action has continued since the devastating attack on October 7 last year. Now, Israel has shifted its focus towards Iran and Lebanon while also launching attacks on the Houthi rebels in Yemen. Meanwhile, Israel is also facing retaliatory strikes. The most significant impact of these conflicts has been on humanity; thousands of people are being killed, and the economy is severely affected.
The Dawn of Destruction: The Story of the Conflict That Began on October 7, 2023
Amidst the tension between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Israel, Hamas launched a major attack on Israel on October 7, 2022. This attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israeli citizens and the abduction of more than 250 people. Since then, Israel has maintained a consistently aggressive stance.
Tragedy in Gaza: Over 41,000 Deaths
Hamas claims that over 41,800 people have died in the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. In July of this year, a strike in Tehran killed Hamas's top leader, Ismail Haniyeh. According to a BBC report, over 58% of buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed. A report by Al Jazeera states that 85% of the 2.3 million population of Gaza has been displaced, including over 14,000 children. The United Nations Human Rights Office reports that in Gaza, a child is killed or injured every 10 minutes, and over 7,000 people are still missing. More than 96,800 individuals have been injured.
Crisis in Israel and Lebanon:
While Israel was attacking Hamas, Hezbollah from Lebanon continued to launch attacks on Israel's northern border. Hezbollah claimed to be primarily targeting Israeli forces, but Israel had to evacuate over 60,000 of its citizens from the border. After weakening Hamas, Israel began targeting Hezbollah present in Lebanon, stating that until they are eradicated, displaced Israeli citizens cannot return. This forced Lebanon to move its 92,000 citizens to safe locations.
In the meantime, Israel killed over 1,500 Hezbollah fighters through pager and walkie-talkie attacks, while 4,000 fighters went missing. During these attacks, civilians were also caught in the crossfire. These bombings instilled terror among Hezbollah fighters, after which Israel began intense airstrikes on Hezbollah on September 23.
Lebanon's Condition: A Nation on the Brink of Destruction
The attacks on Lebanon in the name of Hezbollah have pushed the country to the brink of destruction. Lebanon claims that 550 civilians, including 50 children, have been killed in the Israeli attacks. Reports also suggest that the number of Hezbollah fighters killed in this round of attacks is more than double compared to those killed since 2006. In just a week of fighting, over a thousand people have also died in Israel. Israel has targeted several prominent Hezbollah commanders, including Mohammad Nassar, Taleb Abdullah, and Fuad Shukar. On September 27, Israel attacked Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut and killed its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Iran's Response: Retaliation After the Attacks
After the attacks on Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Iran retaliated by launching ballistic missiles at Israel. Iran fired approximately 180 ballistic missiles at Israel, but Israel stated that there was minimal damage from these attacks. The Israeli military claimed that no aircraft or significant resources were harmed, as most of the missiles were intercepted by air defense systems or fell in open areas. Nonetheless, this attack forced 10 million Israeli citizens to seek shelter. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that its forces used hypersonic missiles for the first time, with 90% of the missiles and drones hitting their targets, focusing on three military sites in Israel.
City by City: The Scene of War's Destruction
The war that began a year ago has inflicted deep wounds on humanity. Although no official figure for economic loss has emerged, missile and rocket attacks have caused destruction from city to city. The damage could run into billions, and Lebanon's capital, Beirut, has been reduced to ruins. According to Al Jazeera, business in the restaurant sector has dropped by over 80% since the war between Hezbollah and Israel began. The tourism sector, which contributes 20% to Lebanon's economy, has been completely devastated, and airlines have had to cut their flights by up to 80%.
In the Gaza Strip, schools, hospitals, and churches have nearly vanished. Israeli attacks have destroyed about 80% of mosques in Gaza, and according to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 814 out of 1,245 mosques have been destroyed. Heavy bombings have severely damaged 148 mosques, and the ministry has reported significant losses amounting to $350 million in its properties. There is also a severe shortage of food, water, and medicine.
