AIIMS doctors reveal: Reasons for 50% increase in student suicides

A recent IC3 report reveals alarming statistics, showing that student suicides in India have now surpassed farmer suicides. In 2021, over 13,000 students committed suicide, indicating a 57% increase over the past decade. According to the report, a student takes their life every 40 minutes, and these numbers are rising at twice the rate compared to overall suicides. AIIMS doctors have highlighted the reasons for this alarming increase, raising societal concerns.

Search for Causes Behind the Rise in Suicide Cases

Over the past two decades, mental health issues have surged in India, leading to a record high of nearly 170,000 suicides in 2022-23. The main factors include poor mental health and rising depression. Professor Dr. Nand Kumar from the AIIMS Psychiatry Department states that people often focus solely on physical health, neglecting the equally important aspect of mental health. Approximately 40% of those who commit suicide are under 30, indicating a tragic loss of young lives. Mental health issues are also on the rise among doctors and medical students, contributing to increasing suicide rates. The number of student suicides has nearly doubled in the last decade, making this a concerning issue.

Decline in Mental Health: Increasing Risk of Heart Diseases

According to Professor Dr. Deepak Chopra from the AIIMS Psychiatry Department, poor mental health is a major cause of heart diseases, leading to an increased risk of heart attacks. Factors such as lack of sleep or addiction adversely affect mental health, raising stress levels and disturbing cardiac function. When cardiac function is impaired, the risk of death from heart diseases increases. Reports indicate that 90% of cardiac arrest cases are linked to mental health issues, highlighting the seriousness of this problem.

Solutions to the Suicide Problem: What Are the Measures?

Dr. Deepak Chopra suggests that yoga is an effective way to improve mental health. Practicing yoga and meditation can significantly enhance one’s mental well-being. Incorporating these practices into daily routines can be beneficial and help reduce stress.
